How to Practice Self-Care While Social Distancing

As online media and social networks constantly compete for our attention with the latest headlines, it can be easy to fall into a relentless feed of overwhelming information.

Here are some tips for self-care to help curb mounting stress over things you cannot control:

Spend time outside every day to take in some fresh air. Just 15 minutes of sunshine can give your body a healthy dose of Vitamin D which studies have shown can provide a host of health benefits including strengthening your immune system.

Practice yoga or meditation. The practice of yoga for those new to it may carry a stigma of unattainable strength and flexibility, but the truth is you can create your own routine suited to your needs and fitness level. Start by creating a quiet place in your home to relax by lighting a candle and choosing some ambient music. Close your eyes and take 10-15 minutes to actively check-in with how you are feeling while taking slow, deep breaths.

Nourish yourself. Stock up on some healthy snacks that can boost your mood and nourish your brain. Almonds, walnuts and fresh berries are great snacks to keep your energy up and your mind focused during the day.

Start a gratitude journal. Use it to remind yourself of the things in life you are thankful for, including your family and a safe home you are proud to have made for them. You may also generate new ideas to show your appreciation for those with whom you do business. Sometimes a personalized, handwritten note can be a welcome dose of sincerity to cut through the clutter of digital messages.

Get enough rest and set a cutoff time each day for checking the news. Switch to some offline activities in the evening like a stroll around the neighborhood, a boardgame, a good book or even an adult coloring book to help your mind unwind.

Write out some personal long-term goals you are working towards. Maybe you're saving for that dream home or a big trip someday. Find an image that represents your goal and place on the fridge, on your nightstand or someplace you’ll see it every day as a reminder.
